In order to aid the researcher in his development of mathematical models, correlations describing certain plume characteristics were obtained for heated surface jet based on data from numerous sources. It was found that simple exponential equations adequately correlate experimental data from a single author, but to bring together data from several sources a special data handling is required. One possible approach is discussed and, based on this approach, general trends depicting certain plume characteristics were obtained. The suggested plume characteristics appear misleadingly simple and could lead to equally misleading results if applied routinely to specific sites. However, the correlations are believed to be of considerable utility in adjusting mathematical models. This is being done now in the Thermal Pollution Research Program as a part of a continuing effort to present current knowledge on thermal plume prediction to the public.
