Abstract
The authors research was part of a program to use the waste heat from nuclear power plants. One such use would be to heat the soil during irrigation to increase the crop yield. The effective thermal conductivity of soils is presented as a function of soil temperature, soil water content, and mineralogical composition. Differences between sandy soils and loam soils are indicated. Both laboratory and field experiments show drying of the soil near the heat source to be a potential problem. It can be overcome by supplying water near the heat source with a subsurface irrigation system. It is possible that on a large heated area some effect on air temperature might occur.
