Abstract
The continued development and testing of a kinetic mechanism for photochemical smog formation is described. Detailed mechanisms containing the individual chemical reactions occurring in irradiated propylene, n-butane, toluene-NOx, and propylene-NOx-SO2 systems were postulated and used to simulate smog chamber data. A theoretical evaluation was made of the contribution of such chamber effects as light source spectrum decay and surface reactions to the reactivity of the chamber mixture. The application of kinetic simulation to a study of hydrocarbon reactivity and ozone production in smog systems is also discussed.
