Abstract
The project has been designed to provide large, outdoor enclosures (terrecosms) for use in evaluating the risk assessment methodology used by the US EPA. These enclosures have been designed to permit testing effects of insecticide applications on non-target populations (voles) existing in nearly natural conditions. The study is necessitated because recent evidence indicates that the existing method (the quotient method, which compares an organism's exposure level to the level of hazard observed at that exposure level) has failed to anticipate ecological damage resulting from insecticide applications. As a result, EPA's Office of Pesticides and Toxic Substances (OPTS) has requested assistance from EPA's Environmental Research Laboratory in Corvallis, OR (ERL-C) in field validating or improving the quotient method.
