Abstract |
An economic base study of Beaufort County, South Carolina, indicated a critical need for economic development to provide additional jobs and tax revenues for the county. A modified input-output model was used to evaluate the economic and environmental repercussions of seven types of economic development in the county. The local demand for environmental quality was also evaluated relative to expressed willingness-to-pay for various types of environmental amenities. A sample survey of Beaufort County households was used to obtain the willingness-to-pay data. On the basis of this analysis, three options for the economic future of the county were identified.
