"Second session under the theme of sustainability, the EPA-RTP Management Council and The Environmental Cutting Edge Speakers Series Committee presents Doug Farr, founder of the architecture and urban design firm Farr Associates (Chicago, IL), to discuss principles of sustainable urbanism. Approximately half of the world's population lives in cities, which are responsible for nearly 75% of the world's energy consumption. By 2050, the percentage of people living in cities is expected to reach approximately 70%. For architectural thought-leaders and practitioners like Doug, that represents a huge opportunity to reduce the human ecological footprint. A thought-provoking session on how cutting-edge architects, urban designers, and city planners are creating vibrant and livable communities to support a higher quality of life and a healthier and more sustainable planet. Doug Farr received his undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of Michigan and his Masters degree from Columbia University. Throughout his 20-year career, Doug has advocated for higher environmental standards within the design profession. Most notably, he served as Chair of the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Neighborhood Development Committee, as well as on the board of the Congress for the New Urbanism. His firm, Farr Associates, recently certified its sixth LEED Platinum project and third LEED-ND project"
