Abstract
A simple Real-Time Automation and Control System (RTACS) Model, when completed, can be used as a tool to optimize the design of a prototype sewer system whose basic components would include: a physical system, sensing elements, control program, and control elements. A modified version of this model was used both to represent the physical system - including the generation and routing of runoff through the sewer system - and to generate runoff data for the control algorithm which employs optimal control theory. To demonstrate the applicability of the RTACS Model, control logic was developed in detail for a reasonable control objective and assumed physical drainage system served by a single main conduit with one lateral line. The operation of the drainage system was simulated by three reservoirs. Main line flow was simulated by two reservoirs operating in series. Combined flow was simulated by the single reservoir on the lateral acting in parallel with the main line flow at the junction point of the two pipe lines. (Author)
