Abstract | The Lansdowne radioactive residence complex and 250' of municipal sewer became contaminated during the period 1924-1944 by radium processing. Clean-up of the site necessitated the removal of contaminated rubble generated by building and sewer dismantlement, and of radioactive soil that became contaminated because waste products from the radium processing activity were buried in the ground around the site. Prior to remediation, radium levels in the soil ranged as high as 700 pCi/g; following remediation, radium levels had been reduced to no greater than 5 pCi/g above the local background of 2.5 pCi/g. Following removal of contamination, the site was backfilled to near original grade and restored as a grassed lot. A replacement sewer line was constructed. (MM) |
