Abstract
In the State of Hawaii, wastes generated by agricultural activities, particularly sugar mill operations, are creating significant water pollution problems which threaten to interfere with the continued growth of the tourist industry, a leading factor influencing growth in Hawaii. This study seeks to determine the magnitude, characteristics, and effects on the receiving water of waste discharges from sugar mill operations, to compare the magnitude and characteristics of runoff from the sugar cane fields with runoff from non-developed areas and to identify remedial measure that would adequately control any observed pollution.
