| Abstract | The 1.5-acre SMS Instruments site is in a light industrial and residential area of Deer Park, Suffolk County, New York. Since 1967 the site has been operated as an industrial facility which overhauls military aircraft components. In 1980 the site owner removed 800 gallons of VOC- and metal-contaminated wastewater from the pool, and subsequently filled it with sand and sealed all drain pipes. In 1981 the county required the site owner to leak test a 6,000 gallon underground storage tank (UST) used to store jet fuel. Because tests indicated leakage, the tank was emptied and, in 1988, was excavated and removed. This Record of Decision represents the first of two operable units at the site and addresses ground water and soil contamination. The selected remedial action for the site includes treating approximately 1,250 cubic yards of soil using in situ steam stripping or air stripping depending on the results of a planned treatability study. |
