Abstract
Toxaphene administration at dose levels sufficient to cause a high degree of maternal toxicity in the rat resulted in a reduction in fetal weight and a decrease in the degree of skeletal ossification. In the mouse the only significant fetal effect noted was an incidence of encephaloceles. This defect was found only at the highest dose level, one which also resulted in overt maternal toxicity as evidenced by an increased incidence of maternal death and a reduction in weight gain. It thus appears that the administration of toxaphene to rats and mice during the period of embryonic organogenesis results in some fetotoxic effects at levels which cause maternal toxicity.
