Abstract
Subchronic toxicity was evaluated in groups of 10 female New Zealand White rabbits exposed to 2-phenoxyethanol for 14 consecutive days at a level of 0 or 0.91 ml/kg/day as an occluded dose to clipped, intact skin. Mortality was observed in 7 rabbits by day 8 of the experiment. Clinical observations included discoloration of the skin at the test site. Necropsy revealed hemoglobinuria; pale livers; dark kidneys and spleens; decreased hemoglobin, PCV and RBC values; increased erythrocyte indices, nucleated RBC's, leukocytes and erythrocytes; and regenerative hemolytic anemia due to intravascular hemolysis of RBC's.
