Abstract
Patterns of macroinvertebrate community composition were examined in streams within a 40,000-sq km catchment in central Michigan, U.S.A., to identify the major environmental gradients influencing community variation. Agriclture and associated clay and sandy soils predominated in much of the region. The objective of the present study was to quantify variation in composition and abundance of stream macroinvertebrate fauna within a large agricultural catchment in terms of environmental variation in water quality and stream habitat features. The intent was to determine whether particular classes of environmental variables (habitat or chemical) account for a significant proportion of variability in community composition.
