Abstract
A major source of pollution in the Susquehanna River having a detrimental effect on water quality is the mine drainage resulting from coal mining operations in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The purpose of the investigations and studies is to establish for each designated coal mining area in the basin (1) the causes and extent of mine drainage, (2) the various mine drainage pollution abatement plans that are available and capable of meeting current Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board mine drainage discharge limitations as well as costs associated therewith, and (3) an abatement plan.
