Abstract
The Carolawn site is an approximately 60-acre, abandoned waste storage and disposal facility in Fort Lawn, Chester County, South Carolina. Approximately 2,500 people receive their water supply from the Catawba River. Storage trailers and tanks and as many as 480 drums of solvents and liquid and solid wastes have been stored inside a 3-acre fenced portion of the property since 1970. An additional 660 drums and 11 storage tanks were located outside the fenced area to the north. Drums, waste, and contaminated soil were removed from the site by EPA in 1981, and all nearby residences were provided an alternative water source. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water are VOCs including TCE, and metals including lead. The selected remedial action for the site includes ground water pumping and treatment using one or more of the following methods: air stripping, biodegradation, activated carbon filtration, and metals removal.
