Abstract
The Spiegelberg site was used for the disposal of domestic waste, with the main disposal area located in an abandoned sand and gravel pit in the northern third of the site. Paint sludge was dumped near the surface water portion of the gravel pit. Organic contaminants have been detected in onsite and downgradient monitoring wells indicating the migration of these contaminants from the site into the ground water. The primary contaminants of concern include: VOCs, organics, inorganics, base/neutral compounds, TCE, toluene, xylene, metals. Selected remedial action for the site includes: excavation of 15,000 cubic yards of waste material which will be separated into liquid and solid sludges and paint residue with garbage intermixed; offsite incineration of approximately 5,000 cubic yards of the excavated waste material; and disposal of the remaining 10,000 cubic yards of waste into a RCRA landfill.
