Abstract
Many naturally occurring nitrogenous organic compounds readily react with aqueous chlorine, exerting significant chlorine demands. Several N-organic compounds also produce chloroform upon reaction with chlorine with maximum formation occurring between pH 8.5 and pH 10.5. The correlation between chloroform formation and chlorine demand, however, is tenuous. It also appears that intermediates may be formed under neutral or slightly acidic conditions which produce chloroform upon exposure to more alkaline conditions. Available analytical methods used to differentiate between free and combined chlorine are subject to interference from organic chloramines. Some differentiation, however, may be achieved using amperometric titration.
