Abstract |
This is a gas chromatographic/electron impact mass spectrometric (GC/EIMS) method applicable to the determination of chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in industrial wastewater. The PCBs present may originate either as synthetic by-products or as contaminants derived from commercial PCB products (e.g., Aroclors). The PCBs may be present as single isomers or complex mixtures and may include all 209 congeners from monochlorobiphenyl through decachlorobiphenyl. A variety of general and specific sample preparation options are presented in this method. This method takes a different approach from those which relyo n Aroclor mixtures for calibration and quantitation. In this method PCBs are detected and quantitated by homolog group. The results can be summed to give a total PCB value comparable to results generated by other methods or they may be presented as 10 individual homolog values. This homolog distribution can provide additional quantitative information on the composition and source of the PCBs. The method performance is assessed for each sample. A set of four (sup 13)C-labeled PCBs is employed as recovery surrogates. If the surrogates are recovered and other QC parameters are within acceptable limits, then the data may be considered valid. |
