Abstract |
Data are presented for Radioactive Cesium (137Cs), in whitetailed deer and vegetation of the southeastern United States along with information as to the nature of the associated soils. The concentrations of 137Cs in some of the vegetation were of sufficient magnitude to account for the 137Cs concentrations found in the deer. The highest 137Cs concentrations in deer were associated with the Humic-Gley soils along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. These soils are predominately sandy in nature and have relatively low fixing capacities. The concentrations of 137Cs in the vegetation grown on the Humic-Gley soils under natural and controlled conditions were greater than from the Gray-Brown Podzolic, and Red-Yellow Podzolic soils.
