Abstract
The report chronologically describes the design and development of the Source Assessment Sampling System (SASS). The SASS train is the principal sampling element for ducted sources when performing EPA's Level 1 environmental assessment studies. As such, it samples process streams and separates the samples into filterable particulate (four size fractions), organic vapors, and inorganic vapors. The design concept and philosophy are discussed, as well as the evolutionary development of the system. Developmental testing, problem areas, and subsequent system changes are described in detail. The report also includes a complete description of the calibration procedures and system used to determine the size cut points of the particulate fractionating cyclones used.
