Abstract
Increased attention has been focused on the effects of acid deposition on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. In order to predict the fate of atmospheric S and its effects on surface and groundwater chemistry, realistic estimates of SO4-sorption capacities of soils are needed. In this study, we report the results of two investigations: the first compared the effects of six soil-sample collection and storage procedures on SO4-sorption with the objective of determining which procedure would least alter its sorption characteristics. In the second investigation, our objectives were to determine the impact of air drying on a broad range of soils and to identify the soil physicochemical properties that might affect sorption capacities as a result of soil drying.
