Abstract
The report describes the washability characteristics of 11 channel samples of lignite: 4 from Arkansas and 7 from Texas. The two samples collected from Dallas County, Arkansas, could be upgraded to meet the current EPA New Source Performance Standard (NSPS) of 1.2 lb SO2/million Btu. The other nine samples, although averaging only a little over 1% total sulfur, were relatively high in organic sulfur and could not be upgraded to meet the NSPS. Physically cleaning these samples provided significant ash reduction which may reduce the potential for boiler fouling. It was also shown that much of the sodium can be removed from these lignites. Analyses showed 37 to 91% reductions of sodium oxide after treatment with a solution containing calcium ions.
