Abstract
The inorganic chemical industry manufactures over 300 different chemicals accounting for about 10 percent of the total value of chemical shipments in the U.S. This industry categorization corresponds to Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code 281 Industrial Inorganic Chemicals established by the Bureau of Census to track the flow of goods and services within the economy. The 281 category includes alkalies and chlorine (SIC 2812), industrial gases (SIC 2813) (e.g., hydrogen, helium, oxygen, nitrogen, etc.), inorganic pigments (SIC 2816), and industrial inorganic chemicals, not elsewhere classified (SIC 2819). Whenever possible, this notebook describes the entire inorganic chemical industry. In many cases, however, specific details relating to some of the topics covered by the notebook (facility size, economic trends, geographic distribution, pollutant releases, pollution prevention issues, and applicable regulations) vary depending on the type of inorganic chemical manufacturing process.
