Abstract | This strategy addressed federal research and development (R&D) related to managing toxic substances and hazardous and solid waste in the environment. Toxic materials are of concern because they can cause harm to human health and ecological systems. The potential for this harm is typically exressed in terms of risk, so management of toxic materials involves assessing and managing risks. Consequently, the three sections of this strategy address: (1) Risk Assessment, (2) Managing Risks from Toxic Substances and Wastes, and (3) Social and Economic Aspects of Risk Management. |
