Abstract |
The report gives results of research to investigate prospects for increasing the size of calcium sulfite sludge particles in flue gas desulfurization systems. The approach included four work packages: a literature survey and development of a mathematical basis for predicting calcium sulfite sludge distribution; a computer solution of the size distribution model to determine parameter sensitivity; a literature survey and screening of analytical methods for measuring settling rate, settled density, and particle size distribution; and planning a test program to investigate parameters not available from previous work to verify the size distribution model. The crystal population balance concept was introduced into the mathematical basis for predicting particle size distribution of calcium sulfite sludge. Relationships were derived that required nucleation and crystal growth rate expressions which must be obtained from experimental data. Available pilot and full-scale scrubber data were used to increase the usefulness of the theoretical model. The relationship derived was solved for a specific process configuration. An approximate solution was obtained assuming that crystal size distribution does not change in the scrubber. A computer routine was written to permit convenient parameter sensitivity studies using the size distribution model. |
