Abstract
The workshop report summarizes the current research and understanding about transfer of contaminants from sewage sludge to the human food chain via land application. As such it addresses the important parameters in the system which can alter the rate and degree of movement of contaminants through the environment. The topics are as follows: effects of soil properties on accumulation of trace elements by crops, effects of sludge properties on accumulation of trace elements by crops, effects of long-term sludge applications on accumulation of trace elements by crops, transfer of sludge-applied trace elements to the food chain, and effects of trace organics in sewage sludges on soil-plant systems and assessing their risk to humans. The report evaluates available data on effects of sludge, soil, and plant factors on plant uptake of municipal sewage sludge-applied trace contaminants and their transfer into the food chain. The summarized data and interpretation will be of value to EPA in regulation and management of land application of municipal sewage sludge.
