Abstract
Research was conducted on biodegradability of toxic and/or hazardous organic priority pollutant compounds. The studies have produced a biodegradation testing protocol to provide a scientific basis for predicting the fate of these compounds in typical activated sludge treatment plants that employ anaerobic digestion as a method of solids stabilization. The biodegradation protocol includes a three-level approach for aerobic studies. The testing procedure focuses on the study of (1) biodegradability of substrate including kinetics and effluent quality as a function of solids retention time; (2) partitioning and intermedia transport including volatilization and sorption; and (3) toxicity to activated sludge systems and to anaerobic digestion.
