Abstract
The South Bay Asbestos (SBA) site is located at the northern end of the Santa Clara Valley and at the southernmost extent of San Francisco Bay, in Alviso, California. The site is within an area of approximately 330 acres, and is comprised of a mixture of residential, commercial, light industrial, and agricultural land uses. In August 1983, an excavation occurred on property owned by the City of San Jose involving the construction of an outfall structure at the Guadalupe River levee. The excavation revealed asbestos contamination ranging from 20 to 40 percent by area. The selected remedial action for the ring levee includes: stripping and rough grading of the levee; placement of a compacted soil layer and a top soil cover followed by revegetation to prevent erosion. The estimated present worth cost for this remedial action is $2,374,700.
