Workers who mix or apply pesticides in the field are often exposed to relatively high levels of such compounds. Illnesses do occur as a result of overexposure, however, most are a result of carelessness or accident. Experience has shown that if the various routes of entry of pesticides into the body are protected, even the more toxic compounds can be used safely. There are four routes of entry: (1) dermal, (2) respiratory, (3) oral, and (4) through cuts or abrasions in the skin. Protection of these routes prevents exposure and prevention of exposure is good insurance against poisoning.
