Abstract | The report is the result of a study initiated to determine the conceptual feasibility of disposing of solid wastes generated within Cook County, Illinois, by constructing a 1,000-foot-high mountain that would eventually be used for a number of recreational purposes. The site finally selected is, therefore, 53 miles from Chicago's Loop and straddles the boundary between Will and Grundy Counties; it covers 11 square miles. The factors discussed and evaluated include waste generation rates, site selection procedures, design problems (subsurface conditions, structural stability, decomposition products, cover material requirements, etc.), various forms and combinations of transportation, receiving and processing equipment, costs, financing, and administration. Contents Notes | "This report is the result of a study initiated to determine the conceptual feasibility of disposing of solid wastes generated within Cook County, Illinois, by constructing a 1,000 foot-high mountain that would eventually be used for a number of recreational purposes. A survey revealed that a mountain of this height could not be built anywhere in the county because of the serious air traffic problems it would pose. The site finally selected is, therefore, 53 miles from Chicago's Loop and straddles the boundary between Will and Grundy counties; it covers 11 square miles. The factors discussed and evaluated include waste generation rates, site selection procedures, design problems (subsurface conditions, structural stability, decomposition products, cover material requirements, etc.), various forms and combinations of transportation, receiving and processing equipment, costs, financing, and administration."--Abstract. |
