Abstract
A southern Appalachian coal was added to the coals slated for comprehensive two-stage beneficiation to further define this method for removing and concentrating pyrite from steam coals. Particular attention was focused on the use of the high-gravity middlings fractions in line with the total steam utilization concept. Eight geographically diverse bituminous coals, used basically for power generation, were collected and subjected to two-stage cleaning studies. The purpose was to determine the suitability of a concentrating table for deep cleaning coals at a topsize of 30 mesh. Sulfur reductions achieved would greatly alleviate the load placed on boilers and stack scrubbers in plants using these coals for power generation.
