Abstract
This is the final report of a study that was conducted at Louisiana State University to develop a feasible method for the direct conversion of cellulosic wastes to microbial protein--a single cell protein (SCP) to be used as animal feed supplement. The SCP-from-cellulose process is defined and evaluated. Discussed are substrates used for fermentation; the treatment of cellulosics; the organisms and the inoculum preparation employed in the testing; batch and continuous fermentation; and product harvesting. Economics of the conversion process are analyzed, and flow sheets showing the overall pattern of the process are presented.
