Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has undertaken a program to help municipalities and engineers avoid problems in wastewater treatment facility design and operation. A series of Design Information Reports is being produced that identifies frequently occurring process design and operational problems and describes remedial measures and design approaches which may be used to solve these problems. The intent is not to establish new design practices, but to concisely document improved design and operational procedures that have been developed from field experiences. With an increased emphasis being placed on the problems of disposal of sludges from wastewater treatment facilities, there has been a growing awareness of improved efficiency and reliability in the performance of in-plant sludge treatment processes.
