Abstract
The rate of sorption of aqueous plutonium onto the surface of crystalline quartz (silica) has been studied as a function of age of the plutonium solution, pH, the amount of plutonium presorbed, silica particle size and the temperature of formation of the plutonium hydrolysis products. Particle sizes of aggregates of the plutonium hydroxide precipitates and polymers have been determined by filtration and correlated with centrifugation studies. A direct method of determining the amount of plutonium sorbed on silica has been developed. Different types of silica have been characterized. Desorption rates of plutonium from silica were investigated, both as a function of pH and age of the sorbed plutonium.
