Abstract
A bath bar pickler and a bath rod pickler are used for cleaning 40,000 tons per year of cold-rolled steel using sulfuric acid at the Fitzsimons Steel Company's Youngstown, Ohio plant. A facility for the treatment of the spent pickle liquor including rinse water was installed based on the vacuum crystalization process of Keram Chemi-Lurgi. This process recovers ferrous sulfate heptahydrate as a nearly dry solid by-product and recovers the unreacted acid for recycle to the pickling tank thus eliminating the discharge of spent pickle liquor and rinse water. This report describes the investigation of process variables and the demonstration of the process at full scale. Costs are discussed. (Modified author abstract)
