Abstract
Over its 36-year life span, the Operating Industries, Inc. (OII) landfill has accepted several types of waste. In 1979, Getty Synthetic Fuels, Inc. (GSF) extracted gas from the landfill for processing and sale. After several permitting denials, GSF abandoned the gas extraction operations in 1987, which were taken over by EPA. Both landfill gas and leachate are generated by the OII site. Since October 1984, collected leachate has been stored onsite in tanks and transported to a permitted offsite treatment facility. Approximately 10,000 gallons of leachate will be collected before implementation of a final site remedy. The leachate contains VOCs including: benzene, TCE, toluene, and vinyl chloride. Remedial action for this site is discussed.
