Abstract
A survey of process wastes resulting from operation of the Ford Motor Company Coke Plant at Dearborn, MI., was undertaken. The survey covered the period from October 23 through November 3, 1949 and was carried out for the purpose of collecting detailed information regarding the wastes produced by this plant. Coal was carbonized in coke ovens for production of blast furnace and foundry coke. Coking conditions during this survey were abnormal in that coking temperatures for production of blast furnace coke were from 350-400F. lower than normal, while coking time had been doubled. This was necessitated by a coal shortage due to a strike in the coal fields. Gas and liquor evolved in the process are treated for recovery of by-products, which include ammonium sulfate, naphthalene, tar and light oils.
