Abstract
During fiscal year 1994 (FY94), two major test programs were completed at the IRF and a third carried through to near-completetion. Incineration testing of fluff waste and contaminated soil from the M.W. Manufacturing Superfund site in Region III was completed as the first major test program (PB95-255725). Testing to demonstrate that the ballistic missile liquid propellant components unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine fuel and nitrogen tetroxide oxidizer can be safely incinerated while complying with the U.S. environmental regulations, as well as those of the two former Soviet Union states, the Ukraine and Russia, was the second major test program (PB95-217683). The third major test program underway in FY94 was a Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) of the pulse combustion burner technology developed by Sonotech, Inc. Two bench-scale incineration test programs were also completed in the thermal treatment unit (TTU) at the facility: an evaluation of the effectiveness of sorbents as additives for metals capture, and a comparative evaluation of TTU performance in treating contaminated soil from the M.W. Manufacturing site.
