| Abstract | The Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 (PL 93-523) authorized EPA to seek the expertise of a National Research Council committee to identify the health effects associated with specified contaminants, areas of insufficient knowledge, and recommendations for future research. The most recent Safe Drinking Water Committee prepared the sixth volume in the series, which contains the results of a two-part study conducted at the request of EPA. In the first part, the committee examined current practices in risk assessment and identified likely areas of innovation in the assessment of noncancer toxic responses and in the use of toxickinetic data to estimate delivered dose and response. The second part consisted of a review of the literature on compounds of interest to EPA and the research community and the calculation of risk assessments for those compounds. |
