Abstract
Field studies were conducted in two southern Idaho areas to determine the effects of different management practices on the quality and quantity of the runoff from surface-irrigated fields. Pollutant removal systems (primarily mini-basins, vegetated buffer strips and sediment retention ponds) were installed at some of the study sites and evaluated to determine their effectiveness in removing sediment and other materials from return flows. Linear programming models were used to determine the economic impacts of using different types of practices to control surface runoff and sediment losses from model farms. Some of the overall impacts of pollutant losses from surface-irrigated areas were evaluated.
