Abstract
The report documents an evaluation of the environmental, economic, and energy impacts of material recovery facilities (MRFs) conducted under the Municipal Solid Waste Innovative Technology Evaluation (MITE) Program. The primary objective of the evaluation was to understand the effects of MRF operations on public health and the environment, as well as on occupational health and safety. The environmental evaluation conducted at the six MRFs considered the impacts on ambient air quality, receiving waters, and community noise levels, while the occupational health and safety evaluation addressed exposure to chemicals, biological aerosols, and occupational noise, as well as physical safety hazards and erogonomic stressors. The economic and energy evaluation was based on publicly available information or material provided by the owners or operators of the participating MRFs.
