Abstract
The EPA has studied and evaluated the problems associated with managing hazardous wastes generated by educational institutions. The report is factual in nature. EPA was not directed by the law to develop recommendations for regulatory or statutory changes. The report identifies the statutory and regulatory requirements for educational institutions to manage hazardous waste, examines current hazardous waste management practices at such institutions, identifies the hazardous waste management problems encountered by them, and concludes by identifying possible ways for educational institutions to improve hazardous waste management. The report primarily focuses on hazardous waste generated by universities, colleges, high schools, and vocational schools. The findings of the report can also apply to waste generated at facilities providing adult education and programs of education of less than 2 years' duration, because factors affecting the management of such waste would be similar for all levels and categories of educational institutions.
