Abstract
Reclamation and redevelopment of contaminated properties in the United States (U.S.) and Europe have been addressed by analyzing what has and is being done at the present time. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) initiated an effort in 1983 which substantially documented the U.S. experience. In 1985 attentention was given to the European experience in the area of reclamation and reuse of the land. Case studies for nineteen hazardous waste sites in several European countries and twelve sites located in the U.S. were selected and examined in detail. These study sites included former coal gasification sites, fertilizer and pesticide manufacturing sites, defense manufacturers and several uncontrolled dump sites. Land reuse focused largely on residential and industrial concerns, but also consisted of governmental, commercial and agricultural facilities.
