Abstract
The economic growth and industrial development of areas contiguous to multi-purpose reservoirs was investigated. A theoretical analysis of location factors reveals that development promoted in the contiguous areas by the project is a function of both the characteristics of the project and the area. Linear statistical models were used to compare the amount of economic development of twenty existing project sites in Kentucky and Tennessee with paired control areas over the period 1940-1960. It was found that some projects promoted rapid growth and others seemingly had little effect. The causes of this wide developmental variation were determined by examining two sites, Calvert City and Lake Cumberland. A favorable combination of factors provided by the reservoir project and location features not influenced by the project must exist before rapid economic expansion can occur. This study indicates the need for a multi-program planning approach which maximizes developmental benefits to limited geographic areas. (Author)
