The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Research Laboratory at Athens, Georgia, conducts and manages basic and applied research to predict, assess, and reduce human and environmental exposures and risks from pollutants in freashwater, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems and the emission of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Major research areas include global climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, ecological risk assessment, sediment quality evaluation, computational chemistry, identification of complex organic pollutants, nonpoint source pollution management, agroecosystem monitoring and assessment program, multimedia nitrogen impacts, bioremediation, chemical remediation, and wellhead protection.
