Abstract
The paper reports preliminary results on the use of trickle bed biofilters with monolithic ceramic channelized microbial support structures for the treatment of VOCs typical of landfill leachate stripping. Toluene was used for the purpose of characterizing the trickle bed biofilter apparatus. The objectives of the experiment were to investigate the performance of such biofilters, with both cocurrent and countercurrent gas VOC and liquid nutrient/buffer flows, at inlet toluene concentrations that are high, relative to most biofilter research to date.
