Abstract
During fiscal years 2000 and 2001 independent reviews called Remediation System Evaluations (RSEs) were conducted at 20 operating Fund-lead pump and treat (P&T) sites (i.e., those sites with P&T systems funded and managed by Superfund and the States). Due to the opportunities for system optimization that arose from those RSEs, EPA OSRTI has incorporated RSEs into a larger post-construction complete strategy for Fund-lead remedies as documented in OSWER Directive No. 9283.1-25, Action Plan for Ground Water Remedy Optimization. A strong interest in sustainability has also developed in the private sector and within Federal, State, and Municipal governments. The recommendations are intended to help the site team identify opportunities for improvements. In many cases, further analysis of a recommendation, beyond that provided in this report, may be needed prior to implementation of the recommendation. Note that the recommendations are based on an independent evaluation, and represent the opinions of the evaluation team. These recommendations do not constitute requirements for future action, but rather are provided for consideration by the Region and other site stakeholders.
