Abstract
This guidance document provides in-depth guidance on the conduct of remedial investigations in support of feasibility studies under Superfund and the National Contingency Plan. It describes the requirements which need to be met to obtain valid data which are necessary and sufficient to determine what response actions, if any, can be considered, evaluated, and applied to mitigate impacts on public health, welfare, and the environment posed by the site. This document describes the essential steps in the remedial investigation process and identifies important factors, information, and analysis needs to scope the investigation; prepare all necessary plans (health and safety, sampling, data management); conduct the site assessment; and evaluate and present results. The guidance document provides government and private personnel with the means to plan, prepare, conduct, and conclude remedial investigations consistent with hazardous waste site cleanup legislation and site-specific requirements.
