Abstract | Extensive construction will be required to provide physical facilities for Olympic events such as ski slopes; courses for Nordic events; bobsled and luge runs; ski jumping hills; ice rinks for figure skating, speed skating, and hockey. Additional facilities for housing of athletes, press, and spectators; transportation; concessions; and other supporting units will also be required. Most of these facilities will be built where eco-systems are fragile and slow to recover from disruptive forces, and any environmental degradation would be particularly evident. Secondary impacts such as accelerated growth of resident population, and long-term use of the facilities constructed for Olympic events, could also affect environmental quality. |
