Abstract
Presented is a state-of-the-art report on highway transportation systems for solid waste. It traces their historical development in the United States, economic justification for their use, basic design and location considerations, and basic cost criteria for constructing, owning, and operating. The report deals only with truck-to-truck transfer systems-- i.e., from route-collection vehicles to large-capacity transfer vehicles. Basically, two categories of these transfer systems are discussed: direct-dump and compaction. An extensive bibliography and specific appendixes are included. (Author)
